The Headcount: notes for group leaders
Updated 8 November 2026
The Headcount is the journal column for people who organise groups going to Komodo by boat, with Arfisyana as the working example: planning notes, route choices, park rules and honest checks, all written around a party of up to 20.
The Headcount: notes for people who organise groups
The Headcount is a column, not a feed. Each note is written for one person: the teacher, the HR lead, the alumni secretary or the eldest cousin who has been handed the spreadsheet. Each note has real numbers in it, and each says what we do not know.
Its name comes from the habit at the heart of every group trip. You count heads at the tender, at the viewpoint, at dinner and at the quay. A column that tracks the numbers is a good companion to that habit.
Browse the list below for the newest notes. Each article links back to the page of the site it grows from, so a question about rooms leads to the cabin page and a question about price leads to the charter page.

Start here: fly or sail, planning a charter, park rules
Start with the mandatory one: fly or sail to Komodo, a decision table for groups. It answers the question that comes before every booking, and it saves a group leader an evening of comparing flights.
After that, read the five planning notes. How to plan a private charter for a group. Itinerary options for 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N. How to organise a community or alumni reunion trip. The park rules and the visitor cap, checked against official sources. How to inspect a phinisi before booking, with Arfisyana as the worked example.
When a rule changes, we date the note and say so. A park announcement true in one month can be wrong in the next, and a note that does not carry its date is worth less than no note at all.
