Kanawa: one last snorkel, then the quay

Updated 8 November 2026

Kanawa for groups is the final snorkel of the standard Arfisyana route, on day three, over a shallow reef beside white sand. The quay in Labuan Bajo is the end of the line, near 12:00. Work backwards from the quay to learn your time in the water.

Kanawa: the last snorkel before the quay on day three

West of Rinca lies Kanawa, a small island ringed by pale beaches. On the standard 3D2N it is the last stop on day three, a snorkel before the boat runs back and docks near 12:00. On the sample 4D3N it moves to day four, after Sebayur.

Shallow coral makes it an easy snorkel and a gentle last swim for tired legs. Day trips love it, so in high season, July and August, expect to share the reef with other boats.

Arrive with the plan already set. Say at breakfast how long the water time is, who goes in first, and who counts the group out. The stop's details are in the table that follows.

House reef and white sand: what to expect

The house reef starts near the sand, in water from one to about six metres deep, and the current is mild. That makes it the easiest snorkel of the whole trip, which is exactly why it comes last. The sand is white, soft and easy to enter, so even the cautious ones get in.

It suits a first-time snorkeller as well as it suits the keen one. Pair everyone, give weak swimmers a life jacket from the boat, and let the confident ones drift further along the reef while an adult stays with the nervous.

Keep the group within a short swim of the boat. The reef is wide, and on the last morning nobody has the energy for a long search.

Time on Kanawa against a noon return

By boat, Kanawa lies between sixty and ninety minutes from Labuan Bajo. The boat docks near 12:00. Work backwards from the quay: noon minus the run, and you know when the last person must be out of the water.

That arithmetic gives the group a window, not a morning. Give it to them as a number at breakfast: you have this long in the water, and then the tender calls everyone in. Groups that hear the number early use it well.

The same arithmetic tells you about your flight. Docking near 12:00 is the plan, so book a flight after that with margin, and let the captain tell you at breakfast if weather changes the hour.

Snorkel kit and sun for the last morning

Bring: the last-morning kit.

  • A hat and sunscreen, because the reef is shallow and the sun is overhead.
  • A dry set of clothes for the ride and the airport. Wet swimwear in an airport queue is a poor idea.
  • A plastic bag for the wet things.
  • Bags packed before breakfast, with the passport on top.

Snorkel gear is on board, and towels too. The last job of the trip is the same as the first: count heads at the tender, count bags, and only then say goodbye to the reef.

Leave a few minutes for a group photograph on the sand before the tender comes. It is the last chance for everyone to be in one place with nothing to carry, so make it a good one, and take it before people start dripping on the bags.

FAQ

Is Kanawa gentle enough for weak swimmers and children?

Yes. The reef lies shallow, the current runs mild, and the white sand makes entry easy. Weak swimmers use a life jacket from the boat and stay close to an adult. The stop is snorkelling only, and diving is not sold. Allow time for the run back: the noon return sets how long the group stays in the water.
