Kelor: the first hill, a rehearsal for Padar

Updated 8 November 2026

Kelor for groups is a short, steep hill walk and the first stop after the 11:00 sail on the standard Arfisyana route. The boat needs about an hour to reach it from Labuan Bajo. It is a hill, not a trek. Treat it as a rehearsal for Padar.

Send the headcount

Kelor: the short first climb on day one

This small hilly islet sits close enough to the harbour to be the first stop after the 11:00 sail. A short, steep path leads to a viewpoint over the bay. It is a hill, not a trek, and not a dragon site.

It is also your first look at the group in motion. Who goes up first, who stops to photograph, who wore the wrong shoes. Watch. Make a note. Set the pace for the rest of the trip from what you see. Expect 20 people to reach the top in a loose cluster, and the way down to go faster than the way up.

The table below gives the climb time and the effort level, exactly as the stop is listed on the route.

Pace for the first hill: a group warms up here

Pace: start slowly, because the path is steep from the first steps and nobody has warmed up. Put the steady walkers in front and an adult at the back. Stop at the first bend for a water break, whether anyone asks for one or not.

Kelor falls in the warm part of the day on the standard route, which makes water more important than speed. A short hill in strong heat tires people more than a long walk in the cool. Take it slowly.

Agree the meeting point at the top before the first person leaves the boat. Count at the viewpoint, count at the foot, count at the tender. Twenty people on a small island is the easiest headcount of the trip, so use it to teach the habit.

Shoes, water, heat: what the first walk teaches

The first walk shows you what the group has packed. Sturdy shoes matter on the steep, dry path; sandals slip. Water goes in every bag, and a hat in every bag too.

Use this stop to fix the shoe problem. Anyone in sandals today will be on the Padar path at dawn, and the dawn is the wrong time to find out. Ask them to switch to closed shoes tonight and thank them for it tomorrow.

Heat is the other lesson. Watch for the quiet one at the back with a red face and no bottle. Water, shade at the top, and a slower walk down will fix most of it.

Kelor on the one-day sample route

Here Kelor is the first of three stops, with Rinca and Manjarite. The quay in Labuan Bajo comes back into view before sunset. There is no night aboard, so the pickup time is set with your charter date and your flights.

The one-day route is a sample, priced on the same bands. The captain agrees the final order of stops with you, because traffic, weather and tides can change it on the day.

A group that wants a first taste of the park without a night on the boat, or a school that only has one free day, should look at it. A group that wants Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point needs at least one night.

FAQ

Can small children and grandparents manage the Kelor hill?

The path is short but steep and dry, so sturdy shoes matter more than fitness. Hold small hands, and let older relatives set the pace or wait at the foot with an adult. A child aged 0–2 travels free with a parent, while a child from age 3 counts as a full guest.
