Manta Point: the current has the last word
Updated 8 November 2026
Manta Point for groups is a drift snorkel on day two of the standard Arfisyana route, in a strong current that suits confident swimmers. Gear is on board, diving is not sold, and a manta sighting is never promised.
Manta Point: the current decides, not the schedule
Manta Point lies in the central park and is also called Karang Makassar. Manta rays pass over this reef, but they are wild, and nobody can promise a sighting. Tide and current decide what the group sees, and the captain decides whether the group goes in at all.
On the standard route it is the last big stop of day two. Sightings follow the tide, so the captain can put Taka Makassar first and Manta Point second, or the other way round, to suit the water.
Mantas are best seen from December through February and again from July through September. January and February bring both the best odds and the roughest sea of the year, so a group that cares about mantas should talk to us about the month before booking.
Snorkelling with 20: gear, buddies, one boat to return to
Expect a strong current. Snorkellers drift along the reef with the water instead of swimming against it, and the depth runs from a few metres to about fifteen. The stop suits confident swimmers. Everyone else wears a life jacket, and a non-swimmer stays on the boat with a named adult.
Pair everyone, and keep each pair within sight of the boat. Count heads in the water, not only on the deck, and again when the swimmers come back aboard. A strong current moves people apart faster than their voices carry.
Agree one signal to return and one person who counts the swimmers in. Headcount: twenty out, twenty back, and nobody goes below the surface for a longer look.

Snorkel, never dive: gear on board, nothing promised
Arfisyana sells snorkelling only. Snorkel gear is on board for the group. Diving is not sold on this charter, and nobody in your group should expect to go down on a tank. If a certified diver among you wants more than a snorkel, ask us before you book.
What you can plan for is floating, drifting and watching from the surface. Mantas are seen from above, as dark shapes with a wingspan wider than a person.
Nothing in the booking promises a manta. Tell the group before the stop that the best result is a manta, and the common result is a good reef drift. Both are fine, and the leader who says so in advance never has to apologise.
When the water says no: the plan B stop
When the current runs too hard or the water turns cloudy, the captain cancels the swim. That is a safety call and the group follows it. Plan B is another reef stop or an earlier Taka Makassar, chosen on the day by weather and tide.
Keep the mood up with a ready alternative. Name the plan B at breakfast, so a change of plan sounds like a decision and not a loss.
Day two ends at anchor, not at the quay, so a stop that runs long costs the group nothing on the dock. The flight home is a different matter: it waits for day three, near 12:00, and that is why we ask you to leave margin.
FAQ
How strong a swimmer must each person be at Manta Point?
Confident, because the current is strong. Anyone less sure wears a life jacket from the boat, and a non-swimmer stays aboard with an adult. The stop is snorkelling only: diving is not sold, and no certificate is needed. The captain can cancel the swim if the water is too strong on the day.
