Fly or sail to Komodo for a group: a decision table for school, company, family and alumni groups
Updated 8 November 2026
Fly, in almost every case. Komodo Airport sits about 2 km, a 10-minute drive by road, from the Labuan Bajo harbour, and the flight from Bali takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Sailing in from Lombok or going overland suits a loose schedule, not a group with one boarding time. Land the day before you board.
One boarding time for the whole headcount
A group travels at the speed of its slowest connection. On the 3D2N, Arfisyana's pickup runs from 10:00 to 11:00 and the boat leaves the harbour at 11:00. Everyone in your group shares that one clock.
That is the whole argument of this page. A couple who miss the boat can follow on a speedboat and laugh about it later. A group of 18 waiting on the pier for two cousins whose flight slipped is a different afternoon, and the first stop, Kelor, is the one that gets cut.
So the question is not only fly or sail. It is: which way in gets every head to Labuan Bajo the evening before, with bags, without a second ticket that can break? Below are the ways in, a table by group type, and the notes we give organisers flying from further away.
Count the people who are travelling, not the people who have paid, and plan the arrival like the walk up Padar: with a reserve. The pickup from the airport or your hotel to the harbour is part of the charter, so nobody needs a taxi on boarding morning.
Three airports, one boat and the long road
These are the routes in, read on 8 November 2026. Every time and fare is indicative: check with the airline or ferry company before anyone pays.
| Way in | Time | Indicative fare, one way | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly from Bali (Denpasar) | about 1 h 10 min | 50 to 150 US dollars | The busiest route: a flight aggregator counted 146 flights for November 2026, on AirAsia, Batik Air and NAM Air. |
| Fly from Jakarta | about 2 h 20 min to 3 h | 80 to 250 US dollars | Direct flights on several airlines. Peak months cost more. |
| Fly from Lombok | about 1 h 15 min | 60 to 140 US dollars | Wings Air only, on small ATR aircraft with tight baggage rules. |
| Tourist boat from Lombok | several days | not current | A dry-season trip, April to October; traveller guides advise against it from November to March. |
| Overland via Sumbawa | 2 to 3 days | not current | Buses and ferries. The Sape ferry is cancelled when the waves run high; check the ferry company. |
Two sources disagree on Lombok. The route opened in July 2025 with three flights a week, detikBali reported. In November 2026 a schedule aggregator listed several Wings Air flights a day. Treat both as a snapshot, not a timetable.
Fares come from a dive centre's 2026 guide, and they are ranges, not quotes. The boat and overland prices we found date from 2024, so we leave them out.
The fly or sail decision table, by group type
Read across your row. Every row ends in the same place: Labuan Bajo the evening before boarding.
| Group | Best way in | Spare day | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| School or study-tour group | Fly together from Bali or Jakarta, on one flight if seats allow | Yes, a full day | A student's ID left at home. One adult carries the name list and copies of every passport or ID. |
| Company team | Fly from Jakarta or via Bali | Yes, use the evening for the team briefing | Staff booking their own tickets on split connections. Book through one person. |
| Family of three generations | Fly from Bali, the shortest leg | Yes, one quiet day for the elders | Heavy bags on small aircraft, and long walks in transit airports. Ask for wheelchair help when you book. |
| Alumni or community group | Fly from wherever each member lives | Yes, meet at one hotel the night before | The member on the cheapest dawn flight on boarding day. Set a latest arrival time and hold to it. |
Sailing in has one honest use for a group: a few members with time to spare, in the dry season, who arrive days early and meet the rest in town. As a way to move 20 people to one boarding time, it loses to the aeroplane on every count we can measure.
Overland is cheaper on paper. It is also two or three days of buses and ferries, and a ferry company that cancels in bad weather. We do not plan group arrivals around it.
The spare day, and the delays it absorbs
Land the day before. We repeat it because it is the cheapest insurance a group can buy.
Here is what we see go wrong, in the order it tends to happen. A domestic flight runs late. Someone has two separate tickets and has to collect bags in Bali, check in again and clear security, which hotel and travel guides say needs at least 2.5 to 3 hours between flights. The weather changes the schedule. In November 2024 the airport closed for a time because of ash from the Lewotobi eruption, Bisnis reported, and boats were rerouted to take travellers out.
None of that is common. All of it is survivable with a night in hand.
The last day matters too. The 3D2N is back in Labuan Bajo around 12:00, so book the flight home after 14:00. If your group must fly earlier, a private charter can shift its start and finish times to your flights; ask us before you buy the tickets, not after.
Bring: printed flight numbers for the whole group, and one phone number per family or team that we can reach on WhatsApp.
Flying in from China and Europe
No route into Labuan Bajo starts outside Asia. The direct flights land from Denpasar, Jakarta, Lombok, Surabaya (seasonal), Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, so a group from further away connects once or twice.
- China: Bali has direct flights from Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xiamen and Chengdu, and Beijing returned in July 2026, Bali.live reported. Fly to Bali, spend the night, take the short hop the next morning.
- Germany, France, Italy and Spain: reach Bali, Jakarta, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur first, then take the direct leg. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur run only a few flights a week, so check the day before you build the plan around it.
- Everyone from abroad: apply for the visa on the official Indonesian e-visa portal before the trip, and fill in the arrival card. Entering through Bali adds the Bali tourist levy.
For long-haul groups we suggest two nights in hand, not one: one to recover in Bali or Jakarta, one in Labuan Bajo. Jet lag at the bottom of Padar is a slow climb.
What to send us before the group books seats
Send us the plan before the tickets are bought. It costs nothing and it saves the most expensive mistake.
- Your headcount and the charter dates.
- Each traveller's flight number and arrival time, or the city they fly from.
- The hotel for the night before, if you have one.
- Anyone who needs help walking or with bags.
We arrange the pickup from the airport or your hotel to the harbour, and back again at the end. We cannot promise any airline's schedule. What we can do is tell you, while there is still time to change it, when a flight plan does not fit the boarding time.

FAQ
Is it cheaper to fly or take a boat to Komodo for a group?
Overland and the tourist boats from Lombok can cost less per head, but they take days and cannot promise a boarding time. For a group joining one boat, flying from Bali, Jakarta or Lombok is the practical choice. Fares are indicative ranges, read on 8 November 2026; check with the airline.
How far is Komodo Airport from the harbour?
About 2 km, a 10-minute drive by road, according to travel and hotel guides read on 3 November 2026. The pickup between the airport or your hotel and the harbour is included in Arfisyana's charter, so the group needs no taxis. Send us the flight numbers and we plan the pickup around them.
Can our group fly in on boarding day?
We advise against it. Boarding on the 3D2N is at 11:00, and one late flight holds up everyone on the pier. Land the day before. If your group truly cannot, ask us before you buy the tickets: a private charter can move its start time to fit your flights.
Can a group fly straight to Labuan Bajo from China or Europe?
No. Direct flights arrive from Indonesian cities, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, according to a flight aggregator read on 8 November 2026. Most groups from China or Europe fly to Bali or Jakarta first, spend a night, and take the short flight to Labuan Bajo the next day.
